Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) is Finland’s premier academic medical center and the largest provider of specialized healthcare in the country. In March 2024, the HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center received Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence, becoming the first hospital in the Nordic countries and only the second in Europe to earn this prestigious designation. In July 2024, the HUS Heart and Lung Center was also awarded Magnet® status.

Marja Renholm works as the Chief Nursing Executive in Helsinki University Hospital (HUS). Her duties iclude the strategic planning and leading of Nursing in HUS. And she is also in charge of the Nursing research and development in the organisation. She is a registred nurse spezialised in surgical nursing. She holds a master´s degree in Nursing Science and a PhD in Health Care Sciences (Nursing). During the past 25 years she has held various leadership roles in Helsinki University Hospital, including Nurse manager, Nursing Director and Chief Nursing Officer.

Dr. Marita Ritmala (RN, PhD, docent/associate professor) is the Magnet Program Director (MPD) of the Helsinki University Hospital System (HUS). Her duties include advancing the development of nursing care in HUS according to the Magnet® Model and assisting and overseeing the HUS hospitals in their Magnet® Recognition application processes. Prior to her present MPD position Marita has worked several years as a critical care nurse and later as an advanced practice nurse in critical care. Her research interests are patients’ sleep quality, ICU nurses’ competence, and recently the impact of Magnet® recognition.
