Building bridges between nursing cultures

The world of nursing is globally connected, yet differences in the nursing cultures of various countries are often overlooked. A significant gap identified by the Magnet4Europe gap analysis is the lack of opportunities for nursing science research within the German nursing landscape. This insight has sparked the initiation of a groundbreaking project: a joint exchange program between German and American nurses.

The main goal of this program is to build a bridge between German and American hospitals within the Magnet4Europe program. Through the exchange, nursing professionals from both countries will have the opportunity to learn about the differences and similarities of their nursing cultures and establish a foundation for joint research efforts. This will particularly involve comparing workloads and leadership responsibilities in both countries.

The importance of this project lies in the urgent need to compare and understand working conditions in nursing in Germany and the USA. The exchange aims not only to identify best practices but also to strengthen professional identity and promote knowledge sharing.

The importance of this project lies in the urgent need to compare and understand working conditions in nursing in Germany and the USA. The exchange aims not only to identify best practices but also to strengthen professional identity and promote knowledge sharing.

An application process has been developed to enable six nurses to participate in the program. Three German nurses will observe three American nurses for a week in August 2024, and vice versa in September 2024. The exchange program includes various elements such as understanding patient safety culture, experiencing Magnet principles, exploring digitalization opportunities, and examining nurse-patient ratios.

This innovative exchange will facilitate a joint research study assessing differences in nursing practices among similar specialties across hospitals and countries. Success criteria include quantitative and qualitative data on changes in nursing practice and patient outcomes.

The results of this initiative could have positive impacts on nurse recruitment, working conditions, and professional identity. It is hoped that this program can serve as a model for hospitals to collaborate with international partners and advance the nursing profession globally.

We are eager to see the insights that will emerge from this exchange program and how they will influence the future of nursing care design.
