Building bridges between nursing cultures Discover the exchange program between German and American nurses inspired by the Magnet4Europe gap analysis. This initiative aims to bridge nursing cultures, comparing workloads and leadership responsibilities. Six nurses from each country will participate, exploring patient safety culture, digitalization, and Magnet principles. This collaboration promises to strengthen professional identities, improve working conditions, and foster joint research efforts.

Strides Made Against Magnet Standards at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, UK Chelsea & Westminster Hospital has been part since the start of the Magnet4Europe study. A number of initiatives have been implemented including annual education needs audits, benchmarking clinical outcomes, offering top up degrees to nursing staff with diplomas, growing nursing led research and implementing shared decision making which has been linked to improved patient experience and reduced staff turnover in the pilot ward areas.

Structural Empowerment: A Framework For Change in Cork University Hospital In the midst of many obstacles; COVID 19 and a cyber-attack, Cork University Hospital started the Magnet4Europe journey from 2021. CUH twinned with Morristown Medical centre, New Jersey (6 Times Magnet Accredited). As an organization, we first worked to understand the Magnet principles and Magnet4Europe research and then implemented structures to support the implementation of the Magnet model in our hospital.

A New Pathway on the same Journey to Excellence Our Lady of Lourdes, Drogheda in Ireland has been on the M4E journey since 2020 and has fully embraced the M4E concept. Though we had excellent empirical data, the critical lack of bench marking both nationally and at European level has been recognised as a major stumbling block in driving empirical data of nurse sensitive outcomes. Cognisant of this we have pivoted towards a journey on the Pathway to Excellence designation.

German Benchmark Initiative Attracts Interest from Hospitals Beyond Magnet4Europe Project Five German hospitals on their way to Magnet have worked on a German national nursing data base since 2022. The comparability of hospitals is a big part of Magnet, but in Germany, the lack of a nationwide benchmarking system has posed a challenge to ensuring this comparability among hospitals. However, the pioneering initiative, B·IN Pflege, has garnered significant attention and continues to grow steadily. The first nursing data are being collected.

Florence Nightingale once stated ‘…never lose an opportunity of urging a practical beginning, however small, for it is wonderful how often in such matters the mustard-seed germinates and roots itself’. The two-day meeting in Philadelphia with 300 hospital researchers, clinicians, and managers from U.S. and European hospitals are covered in this article but also the news that the EU Commission recently completed its second review of the project and approved a six-month extension because of time lost due to COVID-19-related travel delays.

A delegation from St James’s Hospital in Dublin traveled to the US to attend the ANCC Magnet® Conference held in Philadelphia to speak about their effort to ‘Maximise the Response Rates in the Clinician Wellbeing survey’ and how they did it. They also visited their twin hospital, the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York, where they met the local team, were able to attend council meetings and experience the enthusiastic work atmosphere at LIJMC.

Since we started our journey together in the Magnet4Europe study program two years ago, our conversation was led by an attitude of learning, sharing, and connecting. Instead of meeting online we finally met in person. Everyone was very excited.
Coming around the world, meeting people with the same goals in mind, we experienced that even though our healthcare systems or educational systems are different, we have more in common than what sets us apart. |

NHS Trust becomes member of prestigious international standards programme East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, which runs the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, has achieved the prestigious Pathway to Excellence® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Centre. Rachael Corser, Chief Nurse, states that “being designated as a Pathway to Excellence Trust shows that we are committed to continuous improvement, that we value and listen to feedback, and that we provide safe and excellent standards of care to our patients and their families”.

Embedding Excellence at BTHFT through the Quality Lead for Nursing Excellence role Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have benefitted from a new nursing role which has advanced implementation of their Nursing & Midwifery Strategy. The strategy was informed by the Magnet4Europe gap analysis and action plan and underpins nursing and midwifery excellence at the Trust. Working with the Director of Nursing Lead for Magnet, the Quality Lead for Nursing Excellence role has accelerated the pace at which key actions can be undertaken and increased opportunities for embedding change alongside direct care nurses and midwives.

Magnet4Europe study protocol: largest international effort to improve wellbeing of health professionals and patient safety Magnet4Europe, a 4 million Euro project funded by the European Commission, is the largest international implementation science project ever attempted to fundamentally change hospital work environments to improve clinician and patient wellbeing. Recently, the BMJ Open scientific journal published the scientific protocol for Magnet4Europe establishing its scientific and clinical significance.

Over 200 delegates attend the first face-to-face Magnet4Europe Learning Collaborative at University College Cork, Ireland. Months of preparation by the University College Cork and University of Pennsylvania teams culminated in over 200 delegates flying into Ireland to attend the first face-to-face Magnet4Europe Learning Collaborative on the 19th and 20th of May 2022. The excitement was palpable! After 18 months of virtual meetings, the first face-to-face learning collaborative between European and American twins took place at University College Cork, Ireland.

One might think that they have known each other personally for a long time. But as for many other participants, the meeting in Cork was their first face-to-face meeting.

How do you benchmark when there is no national data base? A German story of success. On their way to becoming a Magnet hospital, all European participants have come to boundaries: Compared to the U.S. health care system there are many differences that must be overcome. In Germany, one of the main topics was a missing national data base for nursing indicators. Comparability is a key principle of Magnet – so five German hospitals made their way to creating a national data base. A big success, as it turned out.

Magnet4Europe has launched its second survey in participating European hospitals Magnet4Europe is a study of organizational redesign, funded under the Horizon 2020 programme for research and innovation (Grant Agreement 848031). The project officially started in January 2020 and takes place in six European countries.
As part of this study, Magnet4Europe has launched its second survey a few weeks ago. The survey aims to assess health professionals’ working conditions, quality of care and safety. |

Joint symposium with H2020 funded sister projects at the European Congress of Psychology On July 8, Magnet4Europe will be presented in a symposium "Building a Strong, Healthy workplace in Europe: Psychological Perspectives and Insights From H2020 Funded Sister Projects". The symposium will be held at the European Congress of Psychology (ECP2022) in Ljubljana.

RKU - Universitäts- und Rehabilitationskliniken Ulm visiting Billings Clinic, Montana, the twinning partner of the Magnet4Europe study. After two years of strong travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, European hospitals and their U.S. twinning partners are keen to visit each other in person. The Northwell Heath Nurses Choir – A heart-warming example from the U.S. of nursing resilience from Magnet® hospitals The Northwell Health Nurse Choir’s journey began in 2020 when they gathered virtually to support Nurse Heroes—a nonprofit initiative to help solve the global nurse shortage by raising awareness and providing much needed funds for nursing scholarships. In June 2021 the Nurses Choir gets a standing ovation, the golden buzzer and worldwide attention for their stellar performance on America’s Got Talent.

Minimum Nurse-to-Patient Ratios Policy Saves Lives and Lowers Costs A new study published in The Lancet today showed that a policy establishing minimum nurse-to-patient staffing ratios in hospitals in Queensland, Australia saved lives, prevented readmissions, shortened hospital stays, and reduced costs. |

Defying the pandemic and keeping the Magnet® journey Magnet® hospitals are located around the world. In 2020 until February 2021 for some hospitals Magnet® redesignation was pending or initial accreditation was planned during the same period. Overall, 121 showed that designation or redesignation is possible, even under difficult conditions.

US Clinician Wellbeing Study US Magnet® twinning hospitals in Magnet4Europe are conducting their own study of clinician wellbeing and patient outcomes led by the University of Pennsylvania (Upenn). The US Clinician Wellbeing Study (CWS) includes 60 US Magnet® twinning hospitals and a comparison group of all hospitals in the two large states of New York and Illinois.

Our Twinning Journey Since 2018 the German Heart Center Berlin (DHZB), a 194 bed cardiovascular specialty hospital, had the goal to become Magnet® designated. They were excited to be in Group 1 for the M4E project. The first contact with their twin, Northwestern Medicine Delnor, a 159 bed acute care hospital in Geneva, Illinois, was a bit awkward. It felt like a blind date!

Hooray for 84 percent response rate! The Lovisenberg Diaconal Hospital in Oslo, Norway, has completed the first Magnet4Europe survey for its employees. They received an overall response rate of 84% (300 employees), and thus they believe their communication strategy was a success. Since a high response rate is one of the success criteria for the project, the hospital will share its motivation strategy with you.

Nottingham University Hospital: City Hospital first Magnet® in England Nottingham City Hospital gained global recognition in October 2020 and became the first hospital in the UK - and only the second in Europe - to be 'Magnet®' recognised.
