Nottingham University Hospital: City Hospital first Magnet® in England.

12/10/2020

By Professor Kerry Jones, Magnet Programme Director, University of Nottingham, School of Health Sciences and DAISY International Ambassador; and Helena Edis, Institute Senior Nurse for Care Excellence Accreditations at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
We are pleased to share with you our delight in achieving ANCC Magnet Recognition® for our Nottingham City Hospital. Our Magnet journey, funded by the Nottingham Hospital’s Charity, has taken the best part of a decade. Being the first hospital in the UK to demonstrate care excellence by writing to these Magnet standards, and only the 2nd in Europe, has meant we have learnt many lessons as we’ve progressed in our journey and we have had to be creative in our problem solving.
Alignment with the Magnet framework has focused our attention on three key areas: culture; careers; and challenging the way we do nursing business.
Despite the ups and downs of our journey (including hosting the Magnet site visit during a global pandemic), the pride and elation demonstrated by our frontline nursing team make all the hard work worthwhile. The Magnet framework for care excellence challenges us to continue striving for excellence. Gaining ANCC Magnet Recognition is the beginning of what we are certain will be an amazing on-going journey.
Through shared governance and an enabling culture, our nurses in partnership with interdisciplinary teams and patients have delivered significant improvements in clinical care and patient experience. We have seen improved job satisfaction and retention but most importantly have been able to drive inclusivity, valuing, liberating and recognizing individual talents and contributions. As leaders we have been taken out of our comfort zone and challenged but equally inspired, rewarded and re-energised by witnessing the valuable contribution and impact nurses are having at all stages of their careers.

Chloe Wieckowska, an Oncology Staff Nurse at Nottingham City Hospital speaks highly of her experiences of working in a Magnet hospital: “Our Magnet journey…makes me feel valued, heard and most importantly appreciated. This is because Magnet has brought everyone together to achieve the same goal: to give patients the excellent care they need and deserve.”
